Michaelhouse has been recognised as one of the world’s leading private schools, becoming the only South African private school featured in both the Schools Index by Carfax Education and the Spear’s Schools Index in 2026.

The recognition highlights the school’s long-standing commitment to academic excellence, student development, boarding education and a strong sense of community. For families exploring international education opportunities, global school rankings provide valuable insight into learning environments, pastoral care and the experiences schools offer beyond the classroom.

Michaelhouse Recognised Among World’s Top Private Schools

The Schools Index by Carfax Education, considered a leading international guide for families seeking outstanding learning environments, selected 150 of the world’s top schools through independent education experts.

Two South African schools were included in the 2026 edition of the index, Michaelhouse and Bishops Diocesan College.

Meanwhile, the Spear’s Schools Index provides a guide to the world’s 100 leading private schools. Since its launch in 2020, the index has become a reference point for families seeking internationally recognised schools.

Unlike rankings that focus mainly on academic performance, the Spear’s Schools Index evaluates a wider range of factors. These include academic results, school reputation, culture, networks and pastoral care.

Five South African schools were included in the 2026 Spear’s Index. These were Michaelhouse, Hilton College, Cordwalles Preparatory School, St Anne’s Diocesan College and Western Province Preparatory School.

As a result, Michaelhouse stands out as the only South African private school represented in both international rankings.

A Historic Boarding School With a Strong Community Focus

Founded in 1896 by Anglican Canon James Cameron Todd, Michaelhouse began as a small private school in Pietermaritzburg with only 15 boys.

By 1901, the school moved to its current location in the Balgowan valley of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, where it developed into one of South Africa’s most recognised independent schools.

The school was built around Todd’s vision and strong Christian ethos. During his 1897 Speech Day address at Michaelhouse, he said,

“Our aim is to make, not accountants, not clerks, not clergymen, but men; men of understanding, thought and culture.”

Over the years, Michaelhouse has grown from its early beginnings without electricity or running water into a leading private boarding school known for its heritage, academic standards and community environment.

Campus Life and Learning Opportunities at Michaelhouse

Michaelhouse is a fully residential boarding school, with all pupils and most academic staff living on campus. This approach allows students to develop close relationships, participate in activities beyond lessons and become part of a supportive school community.

The campus is known for its distinctive red-brick, neo-Gothic architecture, with ivy-covered buildings and interconnected quadrangles creating a unique learning environment.

Additionally, the school includes ten boarding houses, a chapel, the Schlesinger Theatre, an indoor centre and a library. Students also have access to extensive sporting facilities, including rugby fields, six turf cricket pitches, artificial astroturf hockey surfaces and a heated swimming pool.

Furthermore, the school provides tennis courts, a weight training facility, a squash complex, a golf driving range, a putting green and an indoor sports centre.

Academic Excellence and Global Alumni Network

Michaelhouse continues to maintain strong academic outcomes through the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate. The school supports personalised learning with a 1:10 teacher-to-pupil ratio and an average class size of 21 boys.

Beyond academics, Michaelhouse has developed a strong international alumni network, including Rhodes Scholars, business leaders and professional athletes.

Notable former pupils include Springboks Ruan Combrinck, Pat Cilliers and Patrick Lambie, as well as cricketers Alan Melville and Tufty Mann. The school has also educated bestselling novelist Wilbur Smith, high court judge Chris Nicholson and former De Beers managing director Gary Ralfe.

Why Global School Rankings Matter for Families

For parents considering private education options, international school rankings can offer useful guidance when comparing schools across different countries.

However, rankings are only one part of the decision-making process. Families should also consider a school’s values, teaching approach, student wellbeing support, extracurricular opportunities and whether the environment matches their child’s needs.

Michaelhouse’s recognition in two major international indexes reflects how a strong school experience combines academic achievement with character development, community and opportunities for students to grow.
