University Of Cape Town Highlights Strong Global Rankings In 2026-27

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has continued to strengthen its position among leading universities in 2026-27, securing strong results across major international university rankings. The university remained South Africa’s leading institution in several measures and demonstrated particular strength in research, academic achievement and subject-level performance.

UCT was ranked among the world’s top universities by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) and the US News Best Global Universities Rankings. Together, the results highlight the university’s research strength and international academic standing.

UCT Maintains Strong Position In ShanghaiRanking

In the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities, published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, UCT was ranked 286th globally and remained first in South Africa. ARWU assesses more than 2,500 universities, with the top 1,000 published, and places significant emphasis on research achievements and research output.

UCT recorded an improvement in its Highly Cited Researchers score, rising from 2.9 in 2025 to 3.3 in 2026. Its Alumni score remained at 1.6, while its Award score remained at zero. The scores for Nature and Science publications, Web of Science-indexed publications and per-capita academic performance declined modestly.

UCT’s strongest individual ARWU indicator was Alumni, where it ranked 104th globally. The university’s performance in the Highly Cited Researchers indicator also points to continued international visibility among highly cited scholars.

Professor Mosa Moshabela, UCT’s vice-chancellor, said

“Rankings provide useful external benchmarks, but each ranking tells us something different about a university. The ARWU result gives us valuable information about our research performance relative to some of the world’s strongest research-intensive universities. We should take seriously the areas where the data points to opportunities for improvement, while recognising the continued strength and international impact of UCT’s research community.”

UCT Ranked Among The World’s Top 1.3%

UCT also achieved a strong result in the 2026 Center for World University Rankings Global 2000 list. The university ranked 276th globally out of 21,291 institutions assessed, placing it among the world’s top 1.3%.

UCT ranked second in both Africa and South Africa. Its overall CWUR score remained at 77.4, while its Education ranking improved three places to 183rd. Its Employability ranking remained at 201st, while its Research ranking moved to 255th.

The ranking evaluates universities using outcome-based measures covering education quality, employability, faculty distinction and research performance. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mosa Moshabela said,

“UCT’s position among the world’s leading universities is a reflection not only of academic excellence, but of a deeper institutional purpose: to advance knowledge in service of society and to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s future and the global public good.”

Professor Moshabela added that UCT’s students, academics, researchers and professional staff are committed to ensuring that the university remains a globally engaged African university. He said that, through Strategy 2030, UCT is embedding innovation and entrepreneurship into the institution to build a future-oriented university that combines research intensity with social responsiveness and continues to shape knowledge, opportunity and change across South Africa, the continent and beyond.

UCT Ranks 122nd Globally In US News

UCT also retained its position as South Africa’s and Africa’s leading university in the 2026-2027 US News Best Global Universities Rankings.

The university ranked 122nd globally, improving from 124th in the previous edition. The ranking assessed 2,250 universities worldwide, placing UCT among the top 5% globally.

The US News ranking focuses primarily on research performance and reputation, using measures including global and regional research reputation, publications, citations and international research collaboration.

UCT recorded particularly strong subject-level results. Infectious diseases ranked 14th globally, while public, environmental and occupational health ranked 48th, immunology 69th and microbiology 75th.

A further seven subjects were placed within the global top 200, including clinical medicine at 104th, social sciences and public health at 116th, ecology at 122nd, cardiac and cardiovascular systems at 129th, neuroscience and behaviour at 131st, environment/ecology at 148th, and psychiatry/psychology at 182nd. Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalisation, Professor Thokozani Majozi said,

UCT’s 2026-27 Global Ranking Highlights

Across the three rankings, UCT’s 2026-27 results demonstrate the breadth of its international academic and research profile. Its performance includes a top 1.3% global position in CWUR, a top 5% position in US News and continued recognition as South Africa’s leading university in major global ranking measures.

The subject-level results also underline UCT’s research strengths, particularly in infectious diseases, public health, immunology and microbiology. Together, these achievements reinforce the university’s position as a leading research-intensive institution in Africa and an internationally recognised centre for higher education and knowledge production.
