Cairo University has released its 2025 Sustainability Report, which it describes as a reference document chronicling the university’s transformation from a traditional institution focused on knowledge dissemination into a “fourth-generation university” that integrates education and scientific research with innovation and entrepreneurship to address pressing social and environmental issues
Strategic Framework and Global Alignment
In a statement, the university’s president, Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadek, said the report was based on an integrated strategic framework that includes a matrix showing how the university’s performance in seven operational areas align with the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
Key Sustainability Measures
Abdel-Sadek said the report confirms that the university has taken several sustainability measures, such as decentralized governance, transforming faculty and institute units to compete in environmental excellence, and adopting international ranking indicators as a benchmark for measurement.
Towards a Fourth-Generation University
The report highlights Cairo University’s ambition to evolve into a fourth-generation institution, where education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship work together to tackle real-world challenges. This approach reflects a broader shift in higher education towards societal impact and sustainable development.
