Mauritius to Host Landmark Conference
Against this backdrop, International Conference on Transnational Education will take place on 25 to 26 March 2026, marking the first conference of its kind in the Indian Ocean region dedicated to examining the opportunities and challenges of cross-border higher education.
Organised by the Uniciti International Education Hub of the Medine Group, the conference will bring together international experts, university leaders, regulators and policymakers to explore the evolving role of transnational education in global higher education systems.
Education Hubs and Global Collaboration
The conference will feature two plenary presentations that frame the global transformation of cross-border higher education.
The first keynote, delivered by Francisco Marmolejo, will examine the growing importance of education hubs as platforms for international academic collaboration. Over the past two decades, a number of countries have sought to develop such hubs by attracting leading universities and creating environments conducive to research, innovation and talent development.
Initiatives such as Qatar Foundation illustrate how education hubs can bring together universities, industry and government within integrated knowledge ecosystems. At the same time, these initiatives raise important questions about governance, regulatory frameworks, financial sustainability and the extent to which such hubs generate meaningful benefits for host societies.
The Critical Role of Quality Assurance
As transnational education programmes expand across jurisdictions, maintaining academic standards and ensuring the credibility and recognition of qualifications have become central concerns.
The second keynote, presented by Nina Arnhold, focuses on the critical role of quality assurance in the expansion of transnational education.
The keynote will examine how quality assurance systems have evolved at institutional, national and regional levels, including developments such as the European Standards and Guidelines under the Bologna Process and emerging collaborative initiatives in Africa and Asia. Strengthening trust and cooperation among institutions and regulators will be essential if cross-border higher education is to expand sustainably.
Sustainable Partnerships and Innovation
Beyond the plenary sessions, the conference programme includes a series of thematic panels addressing key strategic dimensions of transnational education.
One panel will explore the importance of sustainable partnerships in transnational education. Successful initiatives depend on strong collaboration between international universities, local institutions, regulators and industry partners. The discussion will examine the motivations driving institutions to engage in cross-border partnerships and the policy environments needed to support long-term cooperation.
Innovation will also feature prominently. A dedicated panel will explore next generation models of transnational education that integrate education, research and innovation.
