Africa’s higher education leaders will gather in Nairobi in July 2027 for one of the continent’s most influential university conferences. The 24th Conference of Rectors, Vice-Chancellors and Presidents of African Universities (COREVIP 2027) will also mark the 60th anniversary of the Association of African Universities (AAU).
For university leaders, educators, policymakers and students, the event represents an opportunity to shape the future of higher education across Africa through collaboration, research, innovation and institutional development.
COREVIP 2027 to Bring Together Africa’s Higher Education Leaders
The Association of African Universities (AAU) has announced that COREVIP 2027 will take place from 20 to 23 July 2027 in Nairobi, Kenya, hosted by KCA University.
Held under the theme, “Universities for Africa’s Future, Repositioning African Universities for Resilience, Relevance and Global Impact,” the conference is expected to welcome more than 1,000 participants.
Attendees will include university presidents, rectors, vice chancellors, African Ministers of Education, global university leaders, development partners, technology innovators, private sector representatives, researchers and student leaders.
The conference aims to move beyond discussion by developing practical strategies and partnerships that strengthen higher education across the continent.
Five Priorities for African Universities
COREVIP 2027 will focus on five strategic areas designed to improve teaching, research and institutional resilience.
Future Ready Universities
The conference will explore how universities can prepare students for digital, green and innovation-led economies through the African Future Skills University Network. The initiative will support new skills frameworks and stronger links between universities and industry.
Research and Innovation
The African University Innovation and Research Platform will promote research collaboration, entrepreneurship and the commercialisation of African innovations.
Building Resilient Institutions
Universities will examine governance, financial sustainability and climate resilience through the African University Resilience Index, a new benchmarking framework for higher education institutions.
Strengthening Leadership
The African University Leadership Academy will provide leadership programmes, governance frameworks and opportunities for peer learning to support institutional excellence.
Expanding Global Partnerships
The Africa Global Higher Education Partnership Forum will encourage international collaboration, student mobility, research partnerships and engagement with the African diaspora.
According to the AAU, these initiatives are designed to deliver measurable outcomes rather than remain long-term aspirations.
AAU Marks 60 Years of Continental Leadership
COREVIP 2027 will coincide with the Association of African Universities’ 60th anniversary.
Established in 1967 and headquartered in Accra, Ghana, the AAU represents more than 450 higher education institutions across Africa.
For six decades, the organisation has supported collaboration, research, quality assurance and institutional development while strengthening Africa’s higher education sector.
University Leaders Highlight the Importance of the Conference
Professor Olusola Bandele Oyewole, Secretary-General of the Association of African Universities, said the organisation’s 60th anniversary is more than a celebration. He explained that it is an opportunity for African universities to define their role in shaping the continent’s future through practical commitments, stronger collaboration and a shared roadmap for sustainable development and global competitiveness. He also invited vice chancellors, academic leaders, policymakers and higher education stakeholders to take part in the conference in Nairobi.
