Two South African institutions have earned international acclaim, with Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town and Michaelhouse named among the best private schools in Africa and within the top 150 worldwide.
A Respected Global Index
The recognition comes from the Schools Index, a trusted global resource created by UK-based consultancy Carfax Education. The index profiles leading private international schools each year, offering guidance to parents around the world.
Schools are selected through a strict research and review process led by a global team of education consultants. Institutions must meet high standards across academic results, leadership, ethos, reputation, facilities, university destinations, and long-term outcomes for former pupils.
Consistent Excellence
Bishops and Michaelhouse ranked as two of the world’s best private schools in the previous edition of the index covering 2023-2024. This year’s recognition reinforces their standing as leading international institutions.
They join other top African schools, including the American School of Lagos, Pembroke House, and The British International School in Cairo, in representing the continent among the world’s elite.
A Global Perspective on Education
This year’s index includes 150 schools across 14 categories, covering regions such as the UK, Europe, Latin America, North America, Switzerland, Asia, Africa, Australasia, China, Hong Kong, and the Middle East.
Alongside its Global Schools Index, Carfax has expanded its ‘Ones to Watch’ list, highlighting 25 schools that are either close to joining the world’s best or offer something distinctive.
South Africa features here as well, with Hilton College recognised among the leading private schools to watch.
A Strong Showing for South Africa
The inclusion of these schools highlights the strength of South Africa’s private education sector on the global stage. With continued recognition from international benchmarks, the country remains a competitive destination for high-quality schooling.
